Travis Duffey Memorial Scholarship The Travis Duffey Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Travis Duffey, a remarkable young man whose life was cut short far too soon. In partnership with the Lake Cities Soccer Association (LCSA), this scholarship fund helps support players and referees from the Lake Cities area as they pursue their educational goals. Each year, scholarships are awarded to deserving individuals who demonstrate the character, sportsmanship, leadership, and life lessons that the game of soccer inspires. Past Recipients Eligibility Requirements Applicants must: Have participated as a player or referee with LCSA. Be a graduating high school senior in the current school year. Why LC United? LC United is a club in the truest sense of the word. We come together with a common purpose: to help young athletes develop a love for the game, improve their skills, and learn how to compete when competition matters. No one owns our club. We are proudly nonprofit because our mission is bigger than soccer. Love Soccer? At least 13? Become a Referee! Lake Cities Soccer Association (LCSA) recruits and assigns its own referees and assistant referees. All certified referees are trained and licensed through the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), and LCSA games are played under FIFA Laws of the Game with modifications approved by the LCSA Board of Directors. Referees are trained on these modifications, and no additional rule changes may be made by coaches or age group commissioners. For older age groups (U9 and above), LCSA provides certified assistant referees when available. If certified assistant referees are unavailable, trained club or volunteer assistant referees may be used to assist with out-of-bounds calls only. Referees are always needed and are a great way to stay involved in the game while earning extra income. The USSF Referee certification process has two parts. Part 1 is done online. Part 2 is done in person by attending a referee clinic. Part 1: Online Courses Register and pay for the Referee Online Lessons through OMS. Complete all 6 online modules. The online training takes approximately 6–7 hours. Part 2: An In-Person Clinic After completing the online lessons, you can select an in-person clinic through OMS. The clinic includes a 3.5-hour outdoor field session. Topics include Game assignments Referee uniforms Working for local associations Additional referee resources Both parts must be completed to become a licensed referee. Game Day Resources Printing a Match Card Virtual Card A GotSport Virtual Card is a digital player or coach pass that can be accessed on a mobile device through GotSport. It serves as proof of registration and eligibility without needing a physical card. Virtual Cards are used to coaches at games and tournaments. They provide a convenient, secure way to confirm eligibility and help streamline the check-in process. Print a Virtual Card Roster A GotSport Roster is an official list of all players and team officials who are registered and approved to participate with your team. The roster verifies player eligibility and is often required for league play, tournaments, and team check-in. It helps coaches, referees, and league officials confirm that all participants are properly registered and authorized to play. Print a Roster Game Day for Players To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, players should bring and wear the following: No Jewelry - Jewelry of any kind is not permitted during practices or games. Items must be removed, not covered with tape. Soccer Ball U5–U8: Size 3 U9–U12: Size 4 U13–U19: Size 5 Shin Guards - Required for all practices and games. Cleats - Soccer cleats are required. Metal studs and baseball cleats are not allowed. Eyewear - Only sport-approved eyewear may be worn. Regular sunglasses are prohibited. Water Bottle - Players should bring a water bottle to every practice and game. Soccer Kits (Uniforms) U5–U8: LCSA provides jerseys, shorts, and socks in the Fall for use during both Fall and Spring seasons. U9–U19: Uniforms are selected by the coach and purchased separately by families. Goalkeepers: Must wear a jersey that differs from teammates. U.S Soccer Heat Guidelines U.S Soccer Cold Weather Guidelines PLAYERS EQUIPMENT: 1. Jewelry is NOT allowed. For the safety of all players, all items of jewelry (necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings) are not allowed and must be removed. Using tape to cover jewelry is not allowed. 2. Ball – Every player should have their own ball. U4 thru U8 groups – Size 3 U9 thru U12 groups – Size 4 U13 and over groups – Size 5 3. Shin guards: Mandatory and required for all practices and games. 4. Soccer cleats must be worn by all players. All footwear must be of soft toe and have no metal studs (screw-ins) or any other exposed metal. Baseball cleats are not allowed. 5. Non- prescription or non-sport approved eyewear is not allowed (regular sunglasses). Players are responsible for removing unsafe items. If the referee notices it, he or she can stop the game ask the player to remove it. 6. Water Bottle: Players should have a water bottle at all practices and games. Insulated is best 7. Uniforms: U5 thru U8 – Kits are provided for all registered players in the Fall and are to be used again for the following Spring season. Kit includes jersey, short and socks. Referee Game Day Essentials To ensure a smooth and professional game day experience, referees should arrive prepared with the following: Official referee uniform, including Referee jersey, black shorts, black socks, and predominantly black shoes Current referee badge Whistle (a backup is recommended) Assistant referee flags, if assigned Referee wallet with yellow and red cards Pens, pencils, score sheets, or a referee notebook Watch or timing device (a backup watch is recommended) Alternate jersey colors and extra socks Sunscreen and other weather-appropriate gear Plenty of water for hydration throughout the da Being properly equipped helps referees manage matches professionally, maintain accurate records, and provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Referee Report Referee Abuse Prevention Respect the Referee & the Game The Respect Our Referees (RoR) Program promotes a positive, safe, and enjoyable soccer environment for everyone involved in the game—players, coaches, spectators, and referees. The program is designed to reduce verbal abuse, physical abuse, and inappropriate behavior toward referees while encouraging respect and good sportsmanship on and around the field. Why It Matters Soccer continues to grow each year, and referees are essential to every match. North Texas Soccer trains approximately 3,000 new referees each year. More than half of new referees do not return after their first year. Most referee attrition occurs among officials aged 12–16. Nearly 60% of referees are between the ages of 12 and 16. Finding enough referees to cover all matches is becoming increasingly difficult. The number one reason referees choose not to return is verbal abuse from coaches, spectators, and players. By showing respect for referees, we help create a better experience for everyone and ensure that our players can continue to enjoy the game.
